Gun upgrades! They are very fun to do and often absolutely necessary. I’m not trying to diss any guns or makers here, but some guns are quite unusable without some mandatory changes.

I can’t blame you, it’s a lovely gun that deserves nothing but the best. When we love something so much, it makes sense to treat them right. There are tons of changes and upgrades you can make to the M4. But all of them aren’t mandatory nor worth it. I’m here to discuss the ones that are worth it and you should absolutely do.

How To Decide The Upgrade Order For Benelli M4?
I know, I have bombarded you with tons of different upgrades and even more options from each upgrade. But how are you supposed to decide if you want to upgrade even one thing from the list or everything from it? Here is how I think you should approach this decision.
Shooting Style
What kind of shooter are you? Are you a hunter? A competitive hunter? A tactical shooter? Or just owning the gun for the sake of owning a gun? If you fit into any category besides the casual shooter, you will need to slowly upgrade everything I have mentioned so far.
If you are a competition shooter, you can ignore some of them and focus more on what improves the competitive aspect of the gun. For hunters, I highly recommend you to get everything upgraded slowly. No rush.
Budget Constraint
If you are limited on budget and not willing to upgrade everything at once, then you can just take an optic, a collapsible stock, loader for now. Slowly build up your budget and upgrade the rest of the thing as soon as you can afford to.
Do You Shoot at Night?
If the answer is yes, then you absolutely need to buy a M4 sight and a flashlight. Those two things are impossible to ignore for a hunter. Absolutely necessary!
1. Benelli M4 Handguard Upgrade
Onto the next upgrade. This one is another upgrade that you just need to do sooner or later. The handguard, also known as forend on a shotgun, is a crucial part of the gun. It makes the gun smoother to operate if that makes sense. Less hassle = smooth, right?
Anyway, here are a couple of handguards that I cherry picked for you guys.
i) Benelli M4 Truckee Handguard
The first one is made by Mesa Tactical. An American gun accessories maker that often makes tons of accessories for various different guns. Thankfully, they also make M4 accessories. We love to see that, you and I both.
The Truckee Handguard is not your standard steel handguard. Instead, they used aluminum to make the handguard lighter. That doesn’t mean they skimped out on the build quality by any means. It’s still one of the most durable Benelli M4 forends you will ever come across.
The good part about this is, it’s available in both 8” and 11” models. If you want to use a sling with this (which you absolutely do) you can use a sling as well. That’s right, you don’t need another adapter or anything.
Something like the Blue Force Gear Padded Vickers Sling will look absolutely marvelous. The Blueforce padded sling is one of the best if not the best Benelli M4 sling out there.
ii) Agency Arms Benelli M4 Handguard
The next handguard that I recommend is from Agency Arms. They are quite popular among enthusiasts and hunters alike. This handguard is modular and compatible with Mlok rail. That’s pretty neat.
The handguard is made out of 6063 aluminum. It’s extremely light as well. The fasteners on this modular handguard are made out of titanium. They are not going to break anytime soon if ever.
With an astonishing mil-spec hard anodized finish, this arm has no physical deformities at all. In short, it’s one of the best M4 handguards you can purchase ever.
2. Benelli M4 Muzzle Brake Upgrade
The next thing on the to-do list is to upgrade the choke tube also known as muzzle brake. Muzzle brakes’ job is to mitigate the muzzle rise and lower the recoil coming from the caliber after each shot.
Here is something that you absolutely need for your M4, even if you don’t buy any other M4 upgrades, this one is mandatory.
i) Carlson’s Beretta Benelli Mobil 12GA Tactical Muzzle Brake
The first recommended choke/barrel accessory is from Carlson. An American brand that is making the shooter’s life easier with fabulous accessories they made and making over the years.
The Beretta Benelli is a 12GA tactical muzzle brake for the M4. There are two variants of brake available for you to purchase. A cylinder system or the variant in extra full. With this accessory, you can shoot slugs, buckshot, etc. Whatever your hurt desire to fire, you can do that.
The aggressive look on this choke gives the gun a bit of more depth and character. Sometimes, an intimidating looking gun can give you an edge in competitive shooting.
ii) Carlsons Choke Tube Beretta Benelli Mobil 12 Gauge Flush Mount
The second recommended choke tube is also from Carlsons. As I said, they are a well-respected American brand that has fans all over the globe. This is one of their old models.
This stainless steel made choke tube is the total opposite of what you might call aggressive. With a laid back and general compensator style look, this tube is excellent for minimalist fans.
The build quality is excellent and it can fire most shotgun ammunition with ease. You can shoot to your heart’s content with a minimized recoil shotgun with improved accuracy.
3. Benelli M4 Optic Upgrade
As you guessed, the M4 doesn’t come with any kind of optics. So, one of the obvious upgrades that you absolutely should do with this gun is buy an optic and use it with this. Yes, you need a sight for your M4. I know how big of a hassle it is to find the best M4 optic.
Don’t worry, you don’t need to go through that hassle. I’ve already done the research on your behalf. Here are some optics that you should consider.
i) Aimpoint Micro T-2 Red Dot Reflex Sight
The first optic that I recommend to you guys is the Micro T-2 from Aimpoint. They are one of the biggest red dot sight makers in the world and they make good optics constantly for various guns.
The T-2 is a small and compact red dot sight suited for almost any kind of rifle and shotgun. The 2-MOA red dot reticle on this optic is just perfect for a close range shot with the M4.
The weight of T-2 is only 3.3 oz. Being one of the lightest optics on the market, the T-2 is often used with smaller guns for better weight balance. As the M4 weight isn’t that backward, adding a sight like this on your gun won’t make it back heavy all of a sudden.
Without a doubt, Aimpoint Micro T-2 is one of the best Benelli M4 red dot sights you can purchase.
ii) Holosun HS507C-X2 Reflex Red Dot Sight
Holosun is another brilliant red dot sight manufacturer. A Texas based company that imports their designed sights from all over the world. Most of their optics (including this one) are made in China. Some of them are made in the Philippines and Japan as well. Holosun has a great follower base among hunters.
Their sights are durable and often used for small to big-game hunting competitions. The 507c is no exception. It’s made out of highly durable aluminum and the lens in it is fully multi-coated as well.
The 2 MOA red dot gets illuminated from a CR1632 Lithium battery. The battery compartment is well hidden from the daylight. Water won’t get inside the battery either. A great part of this optic is the solar failsafe.
It has a solar panel on top of it that gathers energy from sunlight and stores it. Comes in a real clutch when the battery dies in the middle of shooting.
To use this optic, however, I highly recommend you to get a Scalarworks Benelli M4 Sync Mount. It increases the base height of the red dot and gives it the necessary push to have better eye contact.
4. Benelli M4 Stock Upgrade
The first Benelli M4 accessories upgrade anyone does is to change the stock to something else. While the default stock is not the end of the world, an upgraded stock will still provide you with more comfort and a better shooting experience. Here is one of the best M4 stock you can buy right now.
i) Benelli M4 Collapsible Stock
The default upgrade of this gun. They are so popular that you won’t find them in stock most of the time. And you will often find people selling the M4 with collapsible stock on different gun sales and exchange websites.
This stock is made out of synthetic material. It’s durable and lightweight. Synthetic material feels like home. You have used other accessories of this material before. So, you won’t be surprised by the texture at all.
Out of all Benelli M4 parts, this one is a must to get in my opinion. After all, the end result of your shooting session will depend on how well you control the gun. And stock plays a huge role in that.
5. Benelli M4 Magazine Upgrade
A running debate among owners of this is, whether the 922R is a real issue or not. While some argue it isn’t and some argue it is, I will wholeheartedly recommend you to compile by the law.
Installing a higher capacity magazine tube is quite necessary for this shotgun. The default magazine just doesn’t cut it out most of the time. Here is a magazine upgrade that will increase the Benelli M4 capacity.
i) Freedom Fighter Tactical Magazine Tube
A lovely magazine upgrade for the gun. It’s a tube made out of stainless steel. It’s light and corrosion proof. Corrosion is a mutual enemy of you and mine. Thank god, you don’t have to deal with that!
The job of this magazine tube is to increase the capacity of the gun. From a 5+1 capacity, the Freedom Fighter Tactical magazine tube increases the capacity of M4 to 7+1. It doesn’t sound a lot on paper, but in a shooting practice, you will definitely feel the changes.
You don’t have to worry about the warranty and customer service of this product either. After all, it’s made in the USA and the company is operated by veterans. Their ambition and your needs are the same. Flawless shooting experience. To make that happen, you definitely need one of these in your M4.
If you are feeling like steel isn’t cutting it and you need an even stronger tube. Then you can opt for the Titanium Variant of this same tube that is also made by the same company.
Another small M4 upgrade that you could do following the 922R is to use a precision machined follower. You could opt for any color to increase the visibility of the weapon and give it an extra flare.
6. Benelli M4 Accessorries
Here is a list of some other minor but quite important upgrades that you should slowly purchase down the line.
i) Benelli M4 Light
Yes, a flashlight was made for the Benelli shotgun barrels. The idea of the flashlight is simple, it illuminates your shooting area and helps you hunt better during the night. For nighttime shooting, an illuminated red dot won’t cut it out. You will need something like a Streamlight TLR RM2 or SUREFIRE M600.
ii) Benelli M4 Side Saddle
Another minor upgrade that will make your shooting easier. The point of a side saddle is to reduce your reload time.
If you can just simply access the bullets from the side of the gun, you don’t need to spend extra time finding them from the bag and then reloading. By the time you do that, your prey will escape miles away from you.
To save you from that problem, you absolutely should purchase a GG&G Side Saddle or the Esstac shotgun card. Both of them have excellent compatibility and can handle a lot of extra gauges.
iii) Benelli M4 Trigger and Trigger Guard
Not saying the stock trigger is bad, but we are here to improve the gun. One of the major segments where you can improve the gun is the trigger department. A well balanced trigger and trigger guard can save you from accidental shooting.
You should consider Briley MFG Trigger a European style trigger or the FFT Trigger Pack kit. Both of them are excellent triggers that will make your trigger experience more comfortable and they last longer than the stock trigger.
For guard, get the Briley A&S Enhanced Trigger Guard and call it a day. It’s the most recommended guard for me.
